Knit for Victory—and for the weekend—with America at Work and Play, Book No. 189!

This wartime Spool Cotton Company booklet (cover price 10¢) is written for Chadwick’s Red Heart Sweater Wool, Shetland Floss, and Knitting Worsted on Clark’s O.N.T. pins. The introduction pitches hand-knit sweaters as the nation’s work-and-play clothes. Directions are sized (often 12–20) with blocking charts. Almost every garment is knit; one design is crochet.

Featured designs include:

  • Victory Girl No. 1278 (cover) – turtleneck pullover with snowflake yoke
  • Best Pal No. 1279 – waffle-front all-day cardigan
  • Dress Up No. 1245 – two-piece suit-dress with snowflake yoke
  • Tee Off No. 1293 – extra-length knitted jerkin
  • Peasant Gal No. 1290 – two-color crochet jacket
  • Smoothie No. 1276 – casual hand-knit jacket
  • Raglan Classic No. 1289 – ribbed raglan pullover
  • Best Beloved No. 1287 – buttoned Shetland cardigan
  • Sweet Twosome No. 1286 – mother-and-daughter jumper
  • Reliable No. 1285 – short double-yarn cardigan
  • Snow Daisies No. 1281 – outdoor cardigan with embroidered flowers
