This rare 1937 vintage pamphlet from the National Crochet Bureau celebrates the winners of the First National Crochet Contest. It spotlights the Grand Prize winner, Mrs. Frank E. Hayward of Seattle, Washington, and her exquisite pinwheel bedspread, along with other top entries and easy-to-make patterns that captured national attention.

Highlights:

  • Full pattern for the prize-winning “Star Wheel” tablecloth motif
  • “Wheel of Fortune” lacy motif pattern
  • Complete step-by-step instructions and joining diagrams for the champion bedspread
  • Basic crochet lessons (chain, single crochet, double crochet, slip stitch)
  • Photos and stories of the 1937 contest winners and exhibit

Details: A fascinating 16-page time capsule from the golden age of crochet, featuring real contest entries, motif diagrams, and the exact pattern that took home the $250 Grand Prize. Perfect for vintage crochet enthusiasts, historians, or anyone recreating heirloom lace designs from the 1930s.

Condition note (important — these are 89-year-old originals): Saddle-stitched pamphlets from this era commonly show separation at the center fold from age and use. I have two copies available:

  • One has been archivally stabilized at the fold with thin, acid-free Filmoplast tape so it can be safely handled and displayed.
  • The second copy is untouched and as-found (great for the purest collector).

Both are complete, clean, and fully readable.
