Coats & Clark crochet publications — book number & year index

Coats & Clark crochet publications — book number & year index

This collection is Crochet Ephemera’s working index of original publications issued under the Coats family of names: J. & P. Coats, Clark’s O.N.T., Coats O.N.T., The Spool Cotton Company, Coats & Clark, and later Coats and Red Heart books. The names on the cover changed as the companies did. The booklet in your hand is still part of the same publication family.

Coats numbered most of these booklets. Those numbers are the way collectors search — and they are not unique. The same book number was sometimes reused decades later for a new edition, and sometimes for an entirely different title. Book 305 is Edgings in 1954 and A Book of Edgings in 1972 and 1989. Book 267 is Quick Tricks in Crochet in 1950 and Fanciworks in 1978. When you are matching a booklet, use number + year + title, not the number alone.

Rows marked with an asterisk in the index below share a book number with another publication in this shop. Every row is a separate booklet.

How the names on the cover changed

  • Before the mid-1950s — most U.S. booklets were issued by The Spool Cotton Company and printed as J. & P. Coats, Clark’s O.N.T., or both on the same cover.
  • From the mid-1950s — the imprint is usually Coats & Clark (sometimes Coats & Clark’s O.N.T.).
  • Later retail books — Coats Art. J-series numbers and Red Heart books. Those later numbers live in their own section at the bottom of this index so they are not confused with the classic booklet series.

Looking for a number we do not have in stock right now? The listing still belongs in this index as a reference. Send a note if you are hunting a specific booklet — the shop is added to as original copies come in.

Classic numbered booklets in the shop now

Sorted by book number, then year. Each line opens that booklet’s product page. Asterisk = this number was used on more than one publication in the collection.

Later Coats & Red Heart books

Art. J-series and Red Heart books use a different numbering run. They are listed separately on purpose. Each line opens that book’s product page.

This index reflects current Crochet Ephemera holdings. It is not a complete census of every Coats booklet ever printed.
